IOI'95 Questionaire

At the end of the second competition day of IOI'95 the following (anonymous) questionaire was given to all competitors. Questionaire ------------ How much did you like: PACK -- - # + ++ SHOP -- - # + ++ PRINT -- - # + ++ LGAME -- - # + ++ RACE -- - # + ++ WIRES -- - # + ++ SHOW -- - # + ++ TIM -- - # + ++ POC -- - # + ++ Circle your answer The first batch of three questions concerned the tasks of the first competition day. The second batch of three questions concerned the tasks of the second competition day. The last batch of three questions concerned the auxiliary programs available for the programming tasks on both competition days.

Results

In total, 213 forms were handed out, of which 162 (76%) were returned. The raw data consists of one line per form. Each answer is encoded as follows in a single character:
? = invalid
0 = none
1 = --
2 = -
3 = #
4 = +
5 = ++
The following table summarizes the counts for all Question/Answer pairs (162 = 100%).

Observations

The (batch) programming tasks of the first competition day, PACK and SHOP, peak at answer +, whereas the theoretical task PRINT peaks at answer --.

The (batch) programming tasks LGAME and RACE of the second day peak at + and the (reactive) programming task WIRES peaks at answer ++.

The auxiliary program SHOW (file viewer) peaks at #, TIM (execution timer) at ++, and POC (program checker) also at ++.

These results should be interpreted with great care. The questions were (necessarily) vague: How much did you like X? It is not clear to what extent a competitor relates the amount of (dis)liking to personal performance on the task or to prior expectations of the task. In particular, it should be noted that for every question, each of the possible answers occurs. For instance, 10% is (in some way) enthousiastic about the theoretical task.
